The Question Every New Client Asks
"How many sessions will I need?" It's the first thing most people want to know before committing to electrolysis. The honest answer is: it depends. But that's not a deflection. There are real, scientific reasons why, and understanding them will help you set realistic expectations from day one.
Hair Grows in Cycles
Human hair doesn't grow all at once. At any given moment, your hair follicles are in one of three phases: anagen (active growth), catagen (transition), or telogen (resting). Electrolysis is most effective during the anagen phase, when the follicle is actively producing hair.
Because not all follicles are in anagen simultaneously, multiple sessions are needed to catch each follicle at the right time. This is true of all electrolysis methods, and it's why a single session, no matter how thorough, won't clear an entire area permanently.
Typical Treatment Timelines
Most clients need anywhere from 8 to 18 months of consistent sessions to fully clear a treatment area. Here's a rough breakdown by area:
- Upper lip: 6–8 months, sessions every 4–6 weeks
- Chin / jawline: 8–12 months, sessions every 4–6 weeks
- Underarms: 9–12 months
- Bikini / Brazilian: 12–18 months
- Full legs: 18–24 months
These are estimates. Hormonal factors, previous waxing history, and hair density all affect your individual timeline.
What You Can Control
The most important factor in your treatment timeline is consistency. Clients who keep their scheduled appointments progress significantly faster than those who skip or reschedule frequently. In between sessions, avoid waxing or tweezing as this disturbs the follicle and can extend your overall treatment time.
